Reflecting on 2024: Highs and Lows as a Black Woman in Project Management

At the top of 2025, I sat down to reflect on 2024 and I could not help but feel a mix of gratitude, pride, and resolve. Navigating the world of project management as a Black woman has always come with its own set of challenges and triumphs, and this year was different. From breaking barriers to facing moments of doubt, 2024 was a year of growth, resilience, deep lessons, and a lot of peaceful moments.

The Highs: Wins Worth Celebrating

1. Breaking New Ground

This year, I led and monitored many complex projects — some projects that demanded not just technical expertise but also emotional intelligence and adaptability. Watching my team members thrive and deliver on ambitious goals was a powerful reminder of what’s possible when leadership is rooted in collaboration and authenticity.

2. Amplifying Voices

I made it a point to advocate for diversity and inclusion in every space I occupied. Mentoring young Black professionals and being a voice for equitable practices felt like meaningful contributions. Seeing mentees grow in confidence and skill made it all worth it.

3. Personal Growth

On a personal level, I honed my skills in conflict resolution and learned to set firmer boundaries—a game-changer in a field where the pressure to be “always on” can feel overwhelming. Taking time to celebrate small wins helped me stay grounded amidst the chaos.

The Lows: Challenges and Lessons Learned

1. Navigating Bias

Despite progress, there were moments when I felt the weight of being underestimated or having my ideas overlooked. It’s a familiar challenge for many Black women in leadership, but this year, I leaned into it with courage—asserting my voice and ensuring my contributions were recognized while keeping it cool if you know what I mean…

2. Burnout Looming

Balancing the demands of high-stakes projects and the emotional labor of advocating for change took its toll. There were moments in 2024 when I learned the hard way that self-care isn’t just a buzzword; it’s essential. Taking breaks and leaning on a supportive network became my lifeline. And honestly…we need these reminders every now and then.

3. Imposter Syndrome

Even with achievements to my name, and obtaining additional certifications to advance my skill set, there were moments when I questioned my worth. Learning to silence that inner critic and celebrate my journey became a continuous practice.

Moving Forward: Lessons for 2025

Looking ahead…

I’m focused on three things: sustainability, community, and purpose.

I want to continue championing diversity in project management while ensuring my own well-being isn’t sidelined. Building a community of like-minded professionals is also a priority because none of us can do this alone!

Finally…

I’m reminded of a quote that carried me through tough times in 2024:

“Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” – Maya Angelou

Here’s to building on the highs, learning from the lows, and walking into 2025 with renewed strength and vision.
